A Look At The Planet’s Favourite Red And Black Spinning Wheel

The roulette wheel is the most popular feature at most casinos around the world as the sheer theatre of the game captivates the crowds. The spinning red and black wheel whips up excitement, anticipation and tension among punters as it whirrs around, followed by elation if it lands on the right pocket.

It provides rapid entertainment and it is a simple game to grasp, but there is enough strategy involved to keep people coming back again and again. Roulette has translated perfectly into online casinos and online roulette has quickly established itself as the most popular online game in the world. But how does it differ across the globe?

Roulette Around The World

What is the oldest form of roulette?

Famous French physicist Blaise Pascal invented roulette when he embarked upon a monastic retreat back in 1655. He was bidding to create a perpetual motion machine, but the experiment failed. Yet he ended up inventing an enduringly popular game that is still loved to this day, so it was not a total failure.

Roulette is French for little wheel, and Pascal’s was numbered from 1 to 36. People enjoyed spinning the wheel and seeing where the ball landed for centuries, but its popularity skyrocketed thanks to Francois and Lois Blanc in 1842.

They designed a roulette wheel with a zero on it as a gift for King Charles III of Monaco and that proved to be a pivotal moment in the game’s fortunes. It gave the house an edge and paved the way for it to become a casino game that would take the world by storm.

The kingdom of Monaco was struggling, so King Charles III made it the flagship game for a Monte Carlo casino, and it changed Monaco’s fortunes for the better.

How is European Roulette played?

A croupier spins a roulette wheel featuring 37 pockets – each containing a number from 0 to 37 – and drops a small ivory ball into its outer circumference. The wheel rotates for an exhilarating period and then finally comes to a stop, and the number it lands on is the winner.

A table next to the wheel contains 37 numbers corresponding to the pockets. You can put your chips on as many of the numbers as you like, and if you guess correctly you win.

If you guess the correct number, you are paid out at odds of 35/1. Half the numbers are red and half are black (apart from the zero) and you can bet on which colour the ball will land on. You are paid out at evens if you guess correctly, and the zero slightly skews this market in the casino’s favour.

You can also bet on whether it lands on an odd or even number (paid out at even money), or first 12, middle 12 and last 12, which pay out at 3/1.

How does American Roulette differ?

American roulette is virtually identical to European roulette, but with one crucial difference. It has an extra pocket – double-zero – and this skews the odds further in the house’s favour.

What other variations of roulette are there around the world?

French roulette is essentially European roulette, but with a couple of obscure rules thrown in for good measure. One called “La Partage” states that if a player has made an even money bet – on red, black, odd or even – and the zero comes up, they receive half their stake back.

Another version is progressive roulette, which follows the same rules, but it can lead to astronomical pay outs if the same number comes in repeatedly.

Which variations of roulette can you play online?

Along with European, French and American roulette, you can also play themed roulette games. Age of Gods roulette and Pinball roulette are among the most popular option.

Where can I play roulette?

Most online casinos offer roulette, but Sun Casino is the most exciting option as it provides a number of fantastic variations of roulette ready to play at the click of a finger. You can play all the traditional and themed games, and there is also a live roulette option where you play with a real-life croupier, bringing the glitz and glamour of Monte Carlo or Las Vegas direct to your living room.
